Heat Beads® BBQ Briquettes - a responsible process to make a premium product!
An innovative manufacturing process by Australian award winning company Australian Char converts brown coal into the premium Heat Beads® BBQ Briquettes, with a focus on sustainability. The integrated and visionary production process developed many years ago by Australian Char, in response to its concerns for environmental sustainability, sees brown coal converted into Heat Beads® BBQ Briquettes utilising a 'green' process.
In order to produce Heat Beads® BBQ Briquettes,
Australian Char first takes brown coal char, produced from a product
known to many older Victorians as brown coal briquettes. Years ago
this product was one of the major fuels used for heating in the
home.
Brown coal briquettes are produced by drying and briquetting Victorian brown coal, drawing on the last usable heat from the steam generated at the Morwell briquette and power complex, one of Australia's first cogeneration plants.
Receiving the brown coal briquettes directly by conveyor, Australian Char heats them to high temperature in oxygen free vessels in a process known as 'carbonisation'. The heating process eliminates the volatile parts of the brown coal, leaving high purity carbon called char.
Once the initial heat is put into the briquettes, the carbonisation process is self-sustaining, as the eliminated volatiles then provide the necessary heat to raise the temperature.
The char plant site is fully bunded, ensuring that any rain water or raw water used in the carbonisation process is recycled. Apart from some heat that cannot be economically captured from the process, there is minimal waste.
The briquetting of Heat Beads® BBQ Briquettes also
creates little waste - any spillage of raw material or dust is swept
up and recombined into the barbecue briquettes.
Packaging waste is collected by recycling contractors, and even the moulds of the briquette press, when worn down, are sent back to the foundry for recasting. Australian Char is also a long standing signatory to the National Packaging Covenant, which manages the environmental impact of consumer packaging.
Australian Char was established in 1969 to carbonise brown coal into char. Our customers tell us they use our char products as a substitute for Indonesian wood charcoal produced from rainforest timber.
Australian Char is proud of its contribution thus far to supporting the environment for the benefit of current and future generations and is committed to minimizing its impact on the environment.
